Arthur Skolnik Canada
Arthur opened a Bonsai business in Montreal, Canada in 1982 and imported trees from China, Japan, Taiwan and the US. In 1984 he was invited to live with a Bonsai grower in Shikoku, Japan. He moved his business to Toronto, Canada in 1989 and soon after wrote and produced, "The Growing Art of Bonsai", an educational and instructional video. It is considered by many well know and respected authorities as the best English language video on the market. He has lectured, demonstrated and led workshops on Bonsai, Viewing Stones and Japanese Gardens in English and French, for Bonsai clubs and horticultural societies in Canada and the US. In May, 2005 he was the only Canadian speaker at the World Bonsai Friendship Convention in Washington, D.C. He was on the convention organizing committee for ABS (Montreal 1988) and BCI (Toronto 1997) and is one of the 6 organizers/sponsors of the bi-annual Stone Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He has written articles for many international publications and served 2 consecutive terms on the Board of Directors of BCI. He won the Rosade "Excellence in Design" award and Mr. Kimura awarded one of his trees 2nd prize at a convention in Detroit, USA. 3 of his Viewing Stones were accepted into a permanent display at the US National Arboretum in Washington D.C. His garden displays have twice earned first prize at the Feature Garden competition of the Canadian National Exhibition and at Canada Blooms, the largest indoor garden show in Canada he again took first place twice, for his gardens. Arthur has a very clear and easy-going teaching style. He'll often use humor and anecdotes to ensure his ideas and information are understood. His knowledge, experience, patience and passion have earned him the reputation as one of Canada's best Bonsai teachers.
