Peter Chan United Kingdom
Peter Chan is the doyen of bonsai in the UK. As author of eight bonsai books, many bonsai enthusiasts throughout the world will have taken up the hobby from reading one or more of his books. He is a self taught bonsai practitioner. He started experimenting with bonsai in 1967 when making ceramics at evening classes in London. The bonsai hobby did not take off until he joined the British Bonsai Association in 1974, which was the turning point of his bonsai career. He went on to become Chairman of the British Bonsai Association in 1981, and held that post until 1987. He was also one of the founder members of the Federation of British Bonsai Societies. He quit his nine-to-five job in the mid 80’s to start “Herons Bonsai” which is the UK’s premier bonsai nursery. Peter is perhaps best known for his stunning Chelsea Flower Show displays for which he has won a record tally of twenty one Chelsea Gold Medals. He is regularly featured on British TV in connection with bonsai, and is a very popular speaker and demonstrator at bonsai clubs.
