English bonsai artist Steve Tolley began his bonsai education in 1996 under the guidance of Dan Barton, with the emphasis on bonsai aesthetics and philosophy.

He later studied with Japanese bonsai master Hotsumi Terakawa and in a very short time he has become internationally known for his bonsai creations and for his unique approach to teaching and he is now highly in demand for giving demonstrations, leading workshops and maintaining many important bonsai collections.

Steve is a full-time bonsai artist and has now realised one of his main ambitions which was to start a bonsai school. Here, students are able to come and work in his home studio where they find his enthusiasm and love of bonsai infectious. His garden holds wonderful bonsai material with the emphasis on high quality Japanese trees and European yamadori for the enjoyment of his clients, students and other bonsai artists.
When not teaching and demonstrating, Steve can be found designing and styling bonsai in the tranquillity of his studio and practising martial arts.

Steve has had many articles and photographs published in international bonsai magazines based on his work and in 2005 he was awarded the BCI ARTIST, WRITER PHOTOGRAHER AWARD at the 5thWorld Bonsai Convention in Washington DC, where he was also a demonstrator and workshop leader.
Steve not only enjoys the creating of bonsai, but also the long term refinement and management of bonsai and he maintains some important private bonsai collections in the U.K. and in Europe and also grooms many trees for the top exhibitions.
Many of the trees styled by Steve or worked on by him for clients or with students, have received awards and recognition both in the U.K. at national exhibitions and in Europe at the prestigious Ginkgo Award in Belgium and the Noelanders Trophy. He is known for being an artist of great vision and sensitivity who works with the tree while showing amazing technique and for the attention to detail that he places in his work.

Although Steve is happy working with all species of trees, he is probably most famous for his work with pines, junipers and yews and other conifers which are his favorite.
