Shinji Suzuki Japan Shinji Suzuki was the Japanese headliner for the BCI-FELAB 2007 convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and BCI-IBS 2008 convention in St. Vincent, Aosta Valley, Italy. Shinji apprenticed under Hamano Gensuke at Tojyuen in Omiya City between 1981 and 1987, after which he received his Instructor’s Certificate from the Japan Bonsai School. He also holds his Instructor’s Certificate from the Japan Bonsai Association (1999). Shinji has demonstrated at many major events including the European Bonsai Convention in Monaco in 1995; Golden State Bonsai Federation in San Francisco and Fresno (1998 & 2003), the Asia-Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Convention in Taiwan (1999); the International Bonsai Arboretum Convention in New York (2003) among others. Shinji’s bonsai have been awarded many honors, including at Sakufuten Exhibitions the Prime Minister Award (1996, 2003 & 2005), Agriculture Minister Award (1999), the Japan Bonsai Association Award (2002 & 2004); the Kokufusho Award at the 77th and 79th Kokufu Bonsai Exhibitions in 2003 and 2005; and the Educational Minister Award at the Taikanten in 2004. Shinji is the founder of the Bonsai Museum Taikan to “express the importance of Life, Wishes for World Peace and to promote Japanese Culture through the exhibition of fine bonsai.” He designed the Japanese Garden and directed its construction for The Nagano NHK Broadcasting Building.
