Kunio Kobayashi Kunio Kobayashi’s father was a farmer so Kunio grew up with plants. He attended a horticultural school and after graduation he became a grower of flowers and grasses. Then he learned about satsuki azalea and became totally fascinated by it. Somewhere along the line he also became enchanted with the world of bonsai and less interested in simple horticulture. Kobayashi-san taught himself the art of bonsai and today he is recognized internationally as one of the Japanese Masters. He studied Keido, the art of display, under the founder and grand master of the Iemoto School, Mr. Ichiu Katayama. Kobayashi’s trees, particularly the Keido, have been published in many international magazines. Kobayashi created “Keiga-tei”, “Mukyu-an”, and then The Bonsai Museum. A lot of bonsai fanciers from outside of Japan visit his museum. It has been thirty-three years since Kobayashi entered into the world of bonsai. He has won the Kokufu-sho Prize 13 times; the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Prize 10 times; he has taught 200 Kokufuten awardees; he has written for three consecutive years the series Kuchi, Hacho Te Hacho (Many Mouths, Many Hands) and he has appeared on Tokyo MX television for a year and a half in the Bonsai program. |
