Where prairie meets boreal, nature becomes art.

Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Prairies at the centre of the North American continent, the Bonsai Society of Winnipeg, aka Bonsai Winnipeg, embraces one of the most challenging — and rewarding — environments for bonsai cultivation. Winnipeg is famous for its dramatic seasons, from hot prairie summers to winters that can plunge below -40°C, making bonsai growing here an exercise in creativity, patience, and resilience. Our long summer daylight hours and abundant sunshine also create excellent growing conditions during the short but intense prairie growing season.
What makes Winnipeg unique is the meeting of two distinctly Canadian landscapes: the open prairie and the northern boreal forest. This natural contrast inspires many local bonsai artists, who work with hardy native and northern species such as larch, jack pine, cedar, fir, juniper, spruce, and maple. Many members maintain impressive larch forests, reflecting the rugged beauty of Manitoba’s wilderness and the iconic trees found along the lakes and rocky terrain of the Canadian Shield.
In a place where winter dominates much of the year, many members keep bonsai indoors under grow lights — helped along by Manitoba’s famously low hydro rates. During the long, dark winter months, we enjoy the beauty of bougainvillea, ficus, pomegranate, privet, Fukien tea, tamarind, myrtle, and other tropical and Mediterranean species. Ironically, it is often the species commonly used for bonsai in milder temperate regions that are the most difficult to grow here. Indoors is too warm, outdoors is too cold, and the challenge is finding the balance in between.
As a BCI Member Club, we truly value the diversity of bonsai around the world. Through BCI, we have met bonsai teachers from many countries and have invited several to Winnipeg to conduct workshops and demonstrations. Each February, when cabin fever is at its peak, our general meeting becomes an international gathering as we connect over Zoom with bonsai friends in Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Mexico, and the subtropical United States to tour their gardens virtually.
Many thanks to BCI for creating an international platform that advances bonsai, viewing stones, friendship, and cultural exchange around the world.
We would love to hear from bonsai clubs and enthusiasts around the globe. Please reach out, share your stories, your local species, your growing challenges, and the unique bonsai culture in your part of the world. One of the greatest joys of bonsai is discovering how this living art adapts and thrives across different landscapes, climates, and communities.
