Guangzhou (former Canton), the capital of Guangdong province of over eight million people (the city’s administra- tion area includes about 13 million in- habitants), is located in the subtropical
fertile Pearl River delta and is one of the most impor- tant commercial centers of China since ancient times. It has served as the transport and commercial hub, linking China with West Asia and Africa. erefore it was also called the Maritime Silk Road. Nowadays it is one of the most Westernized and most densely cultivated and developed Chinese cities. Despite this fact, Guangzhou is known as “City of Flowers” where streets and roads are lined by trees, owering bougain- villea and oleanders.
Although spring and autumn are nicest regarding weather, the rst days were sunny but very hot and hu- mid. erefore air-conditioned rooms were a big relief.
