The 5th Hokkaido Suiseki Federation Exhibit was held July 28-30, 2017 in the Sapporo Citizen’s Gallery in downtown Sapporo, the largest city in this northern most major island comprising Japan. Tis event was sponsored by the All Nippon Aiseki Association (ANAA), Kinbon magazine, Aiseki magazine, and a Hokkaido newspaper. Te Hokkaido federation, composed of twelve to ffeen hobbyists clubs, organizes a major exhibition each year in this gallery. On alternate years, the federation hosts a joint exhibition with the ANAA featuring stones throughout Japan. Tis year, the federation held an exhibition of primarily Hokkaido stones; while the ANAA held an exhibition of stones in another prefecture in July 2017.Five of the federation’s hobbyists stone clubs in Hokkaido joined together to stage this year’s impressive exhibition. Eighty stones were displayed, Facing Page; Display featuring a large mountain-shaped Kanayama stone in a ceramic tray and accompanied with a scroll depecting the moon rising over the mountain. The stone is 50 x 20 x 30 cm.Top right; A beautiful Yubari River Baika plum fower stone. This pattern stone is 24 x 9 x 14 cm.Bottom; A rugged Kotaro River water pool stone was named “Autumn Refection” because of its reddish color. This stone is 42 x 9 x 14 cm.Five vendors, all collector/hobbyists, brought many stones for sale. These were at very reasonable prices, often a fraction of the prices paid for stones at the Green Club in Tokyo during major exhibitions.
