But maintaining the beauty of the gardens is difcult, especially when skilled workers are in short supply. Trees in many unattended Japanese gardens have become overgrown, and traditional stone lanterns have sometimes collapsed. Japanese diplomatic offices abroad have received requests for help in mending damaged gardens. In response, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism decided to rebuild two Japanese gardens in California and Romania this fscal year.Te ministry will send Japanese gardeners to repair the two gardens in November at the earliest after inspections of the sites. Te ministry will also provide lectures and develop manuals for local gardeners on how to keep the gardens in good condition.“I hope such eforts will lead to the devel-opment of systems to enable Japan’s private gardening companies to help restore gardens overseas,” said Ryuichi Wakisaka, the ministry’s director for international policy of green spaces environment.Te frst overseas Japanese-style garden is said to have been built in 1873, when the Japanese government put it on display at the Vienna World Exhibition. Te expo raised public interest in Japanese culture, and many Japanese gardens were constructed by individual owners in Europe and the United States. Afer the end of World War II, Japanese gardens were introduced in parks and other facilities around the world as part of bilateral friendship programs.More than 100 countries and regions are currently said to have Japanese-style gardens.
