ne of the things that separate good bonsai artists from the crowd is their choice of material. They develop an ability or even an affinity for choosing plants that can be styled into exceptional
bonsai. Whether its a trek in the wild or a stroll through a plant nursery, they know how to select the best trees.
As you acquire bonsai skills and knowledge, invest your time on species and specimens with good potential. Unless you are practicing a technique, why waste time on a tree that will never become a good bonsai? In this issue, we show you many beautiful works of art to inspire your bonsai journey and hope that these examples will help you appreciate that ephemeral quality that separates good bonsai from potted plants and help you choose better trees to turn into bonsai.
On exhibit are diverse species of trees from the Association of Australian Bonsai Clubs and from the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society. The gallery of bonsai from Taiwan features exceptional trees grown by bonsai professionals.
It is fascinating to see the subject tree before a demonstration, with its unkempt foliage, sometimes obscuring the best features of the trunk and branches, and then witness the dramatic transformation in the hands of artists like Mauro Stemberger, Bjorn Bjorholm, Hanh Tran, and Joe Morgan-Payler. BCI director Enrique Castaño discusses his techniques for testing the suitability of new species for bonsai culture, and Bjorn Bjorholm and Bonsai Empire show us step by step, how to improve a good tree with scion grafting. Barb Round profiles Peter Wilson from the Campbell River Bonsai Club in northern Vancouver Island, a bonsai artist with a keen eye for great material who knows just what to do with the excellent yamadori growing in his region.
If you have more trees than you can count, be sure to read about My Bonsai Diary, it is a new tool with many useful features that can help you manage your collection like a pro. And if you have broken bonsai pots that you did not have the heart to throw away, BCI director Massimo Bandera and I team up to show you how to restore and improve them with the Japanese Kintsugi process.
For stone enthusiasts, we have two articles that feature stones from personal collections. BCI director Gudrun Benz covers the opening of the late Richard Sang Collection in Germany who managed to accumulate many beautiful and varied viewing stones, while Tom Elias writes about one of the most well-known types of stone in Japan, the legendary Furuya Stones.
Whether you collect stones or trees, training your eye to recognize good quality exemplars is an on-going task, one that I hope BCI can help you accomplish. Study and enjoy.
