Budi Sulistyo Budi Sulistyo was born in Magelang, Central Java and began pursuing Bonsai in 1976. He is known as one of the pioneers of bonsai in Indonesia. He wrote a bonsai book published by Penerbit Kanisius in 1988, which was reprinted up to 15 times. He also published the books Estetika Bonsai and Tropical Bonsai Galeri, printed in both Indonesian and English. He hosted a bonsai segment on Televisi Republik Indonesia, the only television station in all of Indonesia, starting in 1988, which was rebroadcast for nearly ten years. He was the first Indonesian to receive an International Award from the Nippon Bonsai Association for his work on the Sianto tree, or Eugenia uniflora, in 1988. He pioneered and was one of the founders of the ASPAC Bonsai Convention, first held in Nusa Dua, Bali in 1991. Budi was the first Indonesian to teach tropical bonsai, beginning in India, the Philippines, Malaysia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia, South Africa, France, Switzerland, Slovakia, the United States, and Puerto Rico. He is one of the pioneers of suiseki in Indonesia. In addition to participating in exhibitions and serving as a judge in several countries, he also became a "Suiseki Patron" at the Indian Bonsai Society.
