Hem Nunkoo is a prominent Mauritian Bonsai artist who regards Bonsai not merely as horticulture, but as a philosophy of life. He views the cultivation and shaping of trees as a lifelong artistic journey that embodies patience, discipline, and harmony with nature. A leading figure in the Mauritian Bonsai community, Hem serves as an Administrator of the Mauritius Bonsai Association and as an International Consultant to the African Bonsai Association (ABA), where he actively contributes to the promotion and development of Bonsai across the Mascarenes region. Hem began his Bonsai journey at the age of 13. Being fluent in both English and French enabled him to access a wide range of Bonsai literature and educational resources from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Africa, allowing him to develop a broad and diverse understanding of the art. Since 2020, Hem has organized annual Bonsai exhibitions and workshops throughout Mauritius with the aim of promoting Bonsai, inspiring new enthusiasts, and increasing public appreciation for this living art. In 2026, he collaborated with the Embassy of Japan in Mauritius to organize Bonsai activities as part of the Japan Day celebrations held in March, further strengthening the cultural ties between Mauritius and Japan through the art of Bonsai. Through his dedication to education, exhibitions, and community outreach, Hem continues to play a significant role in advancing Bonsai in Mauritius and across the Mascarenes Bonsai community.
