This base was carved by the owner out of Peruvian Walnut, which is slightly darker than our native North American Walnut, into a subdued tiered oval base. The highly reflective surface is intended to visually draw the eye into an otherwise hidden arched sanctuary. Two of the three contact points are inset whereas the right point rests on top, merely a playful seating challenge.
This simple but elegant Stone appears to reach toward the viewer. This reaching creates an enveloped emptiness which is enhanced and magnified by the reflective finish. It was purchased "raw" and required extensive cleaning, which instilled in me a healthy appreciation for the effort required in preparing these Ligurian stones for display. This Stone has a very low focal point which necessitates having it displayed at an elevated level,such as a mantle.
