The profile of Nigel Atkinson
I have been associated with bonsai for well over 30 years with the Bonsai Society of Western Australia based in Perth. I followed in my father’s footsteps and became President for a while and was awarded Life Membership to the club I am so passionate about. With a love of nature and landscape, I developed a strong interest in Suiseki and was first made aware of them when I attended the first WWBF convention in Omiya City, now called Saitama. After travelling the world to attend conventions from Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines and more recently two visits to Inner Mongolia in China, Suiseki has become my main interest and I find it pleasurable to search for and collect stones during my travels. I also spend time camping close to our desert in my home state searching for natural stones for my viewing stone collection. The stones I acquire all have the qualities of good Suiseki but generally require a daiza for display. They are just stones without a base. This has now developed my new passion in daiza making for all my stones that need one.
I have been involved in two previous Suiseki Judging events, the last being the 1st BSAPI International Suiseki Online Competition on 28th May 2020.
I was a major exhibitor of Suiseki/Viewing Stones in the recently completed first Virtual World Bonsai Convention held last year. I have stones from many areas but I like to show stones that are from Australia to let the world know we have a good selection of viewing stones. I have been invited to display my Aussie stones at the 8th, 9th and 10th Nippon Suiseki Association’s Annual Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan and am proud that they were the first stones from Australia to be exhibited.
I have a web page called Stones West-Suiseki where you can visit and see more of my stones on display.
